San Diego's Future of Music: Spotlight on Republic of Letters

I stumbled upon an important lesson today!  I've learned, ironically, music is all about sharing - and that it takes a lot of time, exposure and 'sharing' to create a real music fan.

Here's my story..... for months, Cynthia Gaddes kept talking about the 'Republic of Letters' as a must-see band here in San Diego.  After hearing her talk about them for at least three months, I finally joined her at a show at the Belly Up.  I thought the band was solid with a cool sound, but I didn't become a fan just yet.  Shortly after the show, the guitarist sent me an email with a free download of a preview of their new album....I downloaded it (yes, for free), but admittedly, I never actually listened to it.

Because of Jon Block of Sight & Sound, I happened to attend Republic of Letter's CD release party a couple of weeks ago.  It was a lovely evening and they put on quite an event, but admittedly, I still hadn't converted to 'fan'.  I interviewed the lead singer and I even bought their new CD from Carmae (she rocks btw) to support the band, but it is still sitting here in a pile of new music CDs on my desk - yes, I still haven't listened (lame, I know).

Then I met the drummer at the most recent San Diego Future of Music Meet-up - he got my attention with some intelligent commentary and a certain je ne sais quoi.  I thought after the meet-up, 'I really should listen to that CD..." - but I still haven't.  (I'm learning it takes a lot of effort just to get someone to listen!)

However, something changed today, because today I listened to the San Diego Future of Music podcast, produced by our very own Jason Brock.  The first featured track in the podcast is by the Republic of Letters (I believe the song is called 'Kate').  And on this listen, well, finally something clicked....and made me want to hear more.  I'm looking around my desk - where did I put that CD????

What have I learned through this?  It takes a lot of exposure to new music to create/become a fan.  I still don't know if I am yet a true fan of Republic of Letters, but by being on the receiving end of 'sharing' through friends, shows and listening.....I am on my way.

Peace.
